RegiStar 1.0.10 Raw Decoding
RegiStar 1.0.10 build
9360, released May 26, 2021,
incorporates the raw decoder
LibRaw
to read camera-raw files. Earlier builds of RegiStar 1.0.10 used
the DCRaw
decoder, for which development was discontinued in 2018. LibRaw is under
active development and supports images from newer cameras, including Canon .CR3 files.
Camera-raw images that have not been previously opened in RegiStar will be decoded using
LibRaw. However, images that have already been opened with a version of RegiStar 1.0.10
prior to build 9360, using DCRaw decoding, will continue to be
decoded using DCRaw. The two decoders give almost identical output on most images, but
occasionally yield consequential differences, including different dimensions. A change
in an image’s size invalidates its previously assigned stars, cropping mask, and origin offset needed
to place the image in its multimember group. Retention of DCRaw decoding for previously
opened images means they are assured to reopen correctly.
RegiStar detects that an image was previously opened with DCRaw decoding by reading the
RegiStar metrics (.rsm) file for the image that resulted from the earlier open. If the .rsm file
has been deleted, the image will open instead with LibRaw decoding. It is recommended
that .rsm files not be deleted, so as not to risk incorrect attributes when images are reopened.
Both LibRaw.dll and DCRaw.exe are included in installations of RegiStar 1.0.10 build 9360 and higher.
The dual decoding means RegiStar can read the latest camera-raw images while still correctly
reopening images it has previously read.
